A Seat At The Table

A Seat At The Table

Isn't it great to have a mentor, even if it is a symbolic one? How you can look at their biography, trying to figure out how they made their way.

Mostly, it's rather unusual to share experiences in the art world and to show how one went about. But Kimberly Drew, also known in social media as MuseumMammy, doesn't mind being generous and share  knowledge. This is what Drew does in This Is What I Know About Art, a small book in the Pocket Change Collective: "We don't have to be at the end of our careers to uplift others; we must uplift one another along the way if we are to survive."

"Small actions foster change," Drew also says. Take those iconic steps that are featured in most photographs of visitors to the Metropolitan Museum. How to show, Drew wondered as the Met's former social media manager, that there are many doors to the institution? For instance, an accessible one just less than a block away.

This I What I Know About Art starts with curiosity: "The beautiful thing about art, like activism, is that it allows us space to be curious and learn." It shows the anger about the injustice and lack of diversity in the art world: "In this book, I had a personal goal of writing a tribute to my anger."  And it ends with love: "This is my story about loving art so much that you want to see it change for the better."

PS: For those who are about to start their journey: "I have seen many rooms that need people just like you."
